Prologue
Down the mountain toward Andes
|
Prologue
Life is quixotic and full of unanticipated twists and turns; sometimes they are delightful…and sometimes not so…but they never fail to be interesting!
While the song may go “Paranoia, great destroyer”, it's really stress that kills.
When I was first diagnosed with terminal cancer sometime in 2000, I decided that the first thing I had to do was remove as much stress from my life as possible. Toward that end, I moved up to the bucolic solitude of a hermit’s life on top of a lonely mountain road in Andes, NY. I believed that this would be the final chapter of my life, writ small.
Five years later with my cancer somewhat under control (but not cured), I can no longer stand the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual deprivation of the Western Catskills.
Although the countryside is some of the most beautiful in the world with its planetarium clear sky, pristine streams, tree covered mountains, and picturesque valleys and hollows, this was no longer sufficient once all of the great local characters had died off, many of them storytellers which made Catskill folklore legend.
I decided to make the plunge and move up to Albany.
A whole new and unexpected chapter of my life will now open, hopefully to be filled with all that was lacking in the Catskills...and more!

Although having come to Albany for about the past five years, invariably...it was rush in and rush out without opportunity for meaningful exploration.
Today, I decided to break this unproductive pattern and walked across town from the Trailways Bus Terminal to Albany Med.
For the first time, I noticed the incredible architectural diversity of this city.
Sadly, many magnificent brownstones had been burned out and seemingly abandoned, eerily reminding me of of post WW2 Dresden, Germany.
I decided to relocate here from a very rural area of the Catskills...and to create this website dedicated to both residents and visitors.

Back again...this time with the intention of looking for an apartment. I looked at one on a very run down block in the Delaware Neighborhood, although I had been warned away by several well intentioned people.
I couldn't get inside to look around but was able to briefly check out the building from the outside. I called the realtor, put down a security deposit, and made arrangements to look at it on my next visit.
While not exactly Shangri-La, the price was right! I can always "trade up" later...if I survive!

Arriving back home in the Catskills, I started looking for relevant Albany links in anticipation of doing an Albany website.
To my surprise, I really didn't find too many other than the obligatory official government sites, a handful of relgious institutions, most schools of higher learning, and some cultural organizations. Inadequately represented were businesses of all flavors in the private sector.
Realizing that most pages for this site would have to be created from scratch, I steeled myself for this new challenge lying ahead.
Not to complain, there is something to be said for guaranteed job security.

Have spent the last several days looking for active pre-existing links to AlbanyNY related websites but have found relatively few as I suspected. I created some web pages for the site and put on what few links I could find.
Spent a lot of time selecting and compressing music to accompany the created pages. Songs were selected in an attempt to be appropriate for the category, and compression proved desireable in order for music to download more quickly, especially over dial up connections; however, the musical quality didn't appear to significantly suffer because of it.
Can't wait to get back up to Albany to begin taking my own photographs.

I relearned a valuable lesson today. Googling for relevant Albany links for restaurants, motels, etc., almost nothing was showing up
Assuming (usually a really bad mistake) that few businesses had websites, I went to Inktomi (another search engine) and a website popped up that turned out to have a lot of very useful links to area establishments.
That few individual websites turned up on Google indicated that either the websites had not been submitted to the search engines, or much more likely, that the website design had been turned over to the artsy fartsy crowd who didn't have a clue as to what SEO (search engine optimization) was all about.
While many of the sites were graphically impressive, the fact that they didn't show up on Google (at least not within the first page of listings) made them virtually useless for promotional and advertising purposes.
Since this website was submitted to the search engines yesterday, in a couple of months, we shall see whether I can put my money where my mouth (or more appropriately...pen) is!

Still wondering why most Albany business related websites were not showing up in Google, I tried an experiment.
Picking one business at random, I entered albany ny dakota as the search criteria into Google.
After going ten pages deep into the listings and still not getting a hit (how could this be possible?), I decided to investigated further.
While the Dakota Restaurant site was graphically impressive, the problem was just that. This website was created as one big graphic (composed of smaller graphics).
The problem is that search engines can't read graphics, only text. What a search engine can't read, it can't index...and if it isn't indexed, what good is it?
To further compound matters, the webpage wasn't titled nor were there an keywords for a search engine to latch onto.
This will be my last mini-rant on this topic...the problem is not mine...and is between these companies and their respective web designers.
Just another case of the inmates running the asylum, I suppose.

I finally got my apartment. It's pretty modest on all accounts but as it will mainly serve as an office (even though I will be living there), it should do splendidly...at least for the time being.
I finally got to take my first pictures which have been posted on the website. It was a pretty rainy two days though.
I hope to be moved up and in within the next two weeks...so let the games begin.

With two dogs, two kittens, and tons of junk in tow, I finally made it up to the new apartment in Albany on July 20th.
Today I had Road Runner installed...and received a Vonage Broadband Router by courier for internet telephony. I called Resnick Mattress from whom I had ordered a bed and it should be delivered tonight...no more sleeping on the floor pour moi.
I hope to finish unpacking over the weekend...and be able to start working on the website in ernest on monday.

To date, most of my postings to the website have been hit or miss; yesterday (Sunday), I decided to walk around town a bit to get a better sense of the city in order to make my approach more logical. My immediate rationale had been to go to the I Love NY Food Festival at the Empire State Plaza which I heard about on WGY that morning (unfortunately...I either heard the date incorrectly or "they" announced it incorrectly because it wasn't to take place until the 10th.).
Obtaining my directions from Google Maps ,
I walked down Madison (past an empty Empire State Plaza), across South Pearl St. to Clinton Ave., up Clinton to Lark St., and then across Lark back to Madison.
One of the first impressions that came to mind was that you can tell a lot about the soul of a city by its green spaces...and by its architecture.
Albany has some of the most beautiful parks I've ever seen. There are many and they're beautifully maintained and landscaped. Practically every street has trees on both sides.
As to architecture, it's pretty obvious that Albany has a keen sense of self, and respects it history and traditions, unlike Manhattan which keeps frantically trying to reinvent itself by its endless rebuilding ever denser and higher albeit at the expense of its core humanity.

I went to my first "event" in Albany. It was the "I love NY Food Festival" at the Empire State Plaza and took several pictures, non terribly spectacular, but pictures non the less. While it was really hot and humid, it felt good to get back into the swing of things again.
The food was great as was the music...and the event was well attended. As I was in the neighborhood, I tried to apply for a library card at the NYS Library; Since I had no i.d. containing my address, this project will have to be put off for another day.

At Google's request (no, not to just me but to all webbies), I spent several hours creating an XML Sitemap using UTF-8 encoding. This is just a fancy sounding text file that makes it easier for search "spiders" or "bots" to crawl web pages in order to index them. After all, if the various search engines are kind enough to index these web pages, the least I can do is cooperate in every way possible to make their job easier.
While I had intended to go back to the library to apply for a card, this will just have to wait for tomorrow.

I was really looking forward to attending the Grand Funk Railroad concert at the Empire State Plaza this evening in order to take pix for the website; however, I received chemo today and sadly, don't think I'll be quite up to it. It just shows to go you..."timing is everything." Perhaps if I get some last minute energy, "I'll still be able to make it" said the eternal optimist within me!

My optimisim notwithstanding, I just couldn't get it quite together enough to attend last night's concert...but today is another day with new and myriad possibilities. For example, I discovered that the Google Sitemap I created the other day actually worked (although if the truth be known, it took me several tries to finally get it right)...and that Google is in the process of indexing twenty pages of this website. Whee Haa!

Today being Sunday, I think Illl take a break from the website, excepting this log entry. I'm just having too much fun right now engaging in a spirited debate on FREE REPUBLIC regarding the future of Iraq and its possible encompassing of Sharia Law into its proposed constitution. It's often been said that the more things change, the more they stay the same!

I just went down to Mansion Hill to see for myself the after effects of Sunday morning's devestating fire. All that remained of several buildings were the facades which may or may not be able to be saved. It broke my heart because the loss of this one of a kind neighborhood transcends not only Albany but all of civilized humanity.

Yesterday was picture taking day. I went down to the financial district on Pearl Street and took several, some better than others. I wanted to do down to the Port of Albany but because of construction blocking my entrance (I was getting pretty tired by this time in any event and had the uphill treck home with which to contend), I decided to call it a day. I did take several more pix on the way back of the restoration efforts at saving the facades of several Mansion Hill row houses destroyed in last weekend's fire.
Today so far has been trying to play catch up in the graphics department. I managed to create home page graphics (with accompanying music) for God Bless Our Troops Sunday (tomorrow), Labor Day, 9-11 Anniversary, Grandparent's Day, and the Autumn Equinox.
Each graphic with appropriate music looks like it's taking about 3 - 4 hours, a lot of work but hopefully worth the effort.
While taking a break from the graphics, I decided to take a walk in Washington Park. Camera in hand, I stumbled across the Latin Fest.

Although I haven't been able to go around taking pictures for the last several days because of crummy weather, I've been doing some behind the scenes work. I contacted (although I haven't yet received a response) Mary Sliwa of the Guardian Angels to find out when the Angels would be patrolling the Arbor Hill Neighborhood so I could photograph them in action.
The weather is great today so perhaps I'll wander over to Arbor Hill and take some pictures anyway.

Early this morning, a great American patriot died. Serving his country honorably until the very end, Chief Justice William Rehnquist finally lost his year long battle to thyroid cancer. Justice Rhenquist, you will always be honoroed for your dedication to your office and upholding the lofty principles of Federalism

Yesterday, I took a few pictures of the Labor Day Festival in Washington Park. The turnout was pretty dismal so I only took a couple and split.
On a more somber note, I changed the music which I heard on Imus this morning on the Home Page to reflect the current crisis down south.

Wow! I can't believe it's been a whole month since my last entry...where do the time go? Although I started volunteering at the Stratton V.A. Hospital several hours weekly, and although I have been contributing to Where I Stand, that hardly explains why time has been evaporating in front of my eyes. Ah yes, I did compile a preliminary post morten analysis of Hurricane Katrina and kind of finished a brief history of Albany (next time I'll have to try using Dragon Naturally Speaking...a voice to text program) but still. I guess I had better figure out a way to better manage my time.

DUH! It's amazing how all too often, the most obvious things in life can be overlooked. For example, it occurred to me yesterday that as long as we had pictures with accompanying text on this site, we could use the text as links to outside sources to better explain some of the background behind the pix. I started doing this today in the parks section...and this practice will continue from this point forward.
I guess there's no denying it, summer has gone...and winter is here. Brrrrrr.

An old friend dropped by and was looking for something to do. We wound up going to the New York State Museum. It really is a great place to learn...and I took a bunch of pictures of various displays. For the photogs. out there, ASA was 400, f=2.0, s=1/30 sec. - hand held Sony digital DSC-F707. Because the light level on most exhibits was quite low, extensive post processing using Paint Shop Pro v. 9.0 was employed, using the curves function.

We'll probably resume expanding this site sometime in the Spring when the weather is more cooperative.

Wow...this has been a rough season for picture taking with most days either being rainy or overcast. Oh well! In any event, I'm looking forward to the Lark Street Festival and am praying for great weather because almost every major event this spring and summer has been rained out.
Just a brief technical update. A search feature has been added to facilitate finding information on this site...and as it only responds to text, most buttonized links will be changed to text in the near future. Additionally, grammatical marks like apostrophes and dashes also screw up the search results so some of the text will also need to be changed. What a headache ;-(

Well, after spending about what for me were about four painful hours, I was able to get about thirty minutes of video footage of the Lark Fest. Then came the hard part!
Running back to the office, I spent the next twenty hours or so editing the footage down to about three minutes of almost passable video. Heeere's Johnny!
